The Nationalist Party has pledged to be the voice of Munxar residents, who are concerned about plans to construct a manure clamp in the locality.
Speaking at a press conference in Gozo this morning, MPs Chris Said and Robert Cutajar said the PN would act as a voice for the residents of Munxar just as it had stood up for farmers at Bulebel and Zonqor.
Last August, The Malta Independent on Sunday reported how residents were up in arms that the plant, which is located on Triq Zghawri, will be used for the management and storage of manure, despite the detrimental effect it could have on the surrounding community.
The Munxar Local Council this week unanimously approved a motion to bring in a number of experts to examine the potential consequences of the proposed manure clamp. The motion was moved by the Nationalist councilors.
Chris Said said the planned manure clamp would affect people’s wellbeing and health, now and in future.
He pointed that truckloads of manure would be driven through the centre of the village.
The PN, he said, was not against the development of a manure facility but such a clamp should be situated in another location, away from residents. He pointed out that no impact assessment had been carried out.
Robert Cutajar said the PN was being effective even in local councils where it did not have a majority. Nationalist councillors were voicing the concerns of residents, he said.
He insisted that a lack of consultation with residents had become the order of the day under the present administration. The Munxar case was just one of many such instances.
PN Munxar councillors Damien Spiteri and Paul Curmi said their motion, which was approved by the council, calls for an evaluation that defines the consequences of the planned facility on residents.
