Dr Anthony Galea from the Physical Oceanography Research Group within the Department of Geosciences at the Faculty of Science, University of Malta, won this year's National Public Speaking competition organised by the Junior Chamber International Malta (JCI Malta) in collaboration with the Kunsill Nazzjonali taż-Żgħażagħ (KNŻ) and the English-Speaking Union of Malta (ESU Malta).
On 16 March Dr Galea passed through the Semi-finals and won the contest on the following Sunday. This year's topic was The best way to predict the future is to invent it and Dr Galea impressed the panel of judges with his five-minute speech entitled Inventing the future through science featuring the Bernoulli principle. The national final also included a three-minute impropmtu speech in front of an audience.
The declared winner said, "It was an excellent opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge in improving public-speaking skills". Dr Galea is set to represent Malta in the 2018 JCI European conference, which will be held in Riga, Latvia in June.
