Wednesday, 11 April 2018, 13:00 Last update: about 7 years ago

A tree in Lija that was the subject of a video uploaded on Facebook by a concerned citizen was chopped off this afternoon.

A woman, Lilian Chetcuti Riolo, uploaded a video on Facevook showing a tree that protrudes dangerously on the road near the Lija cemetery as one is travelling towards Birkirkara.

It was clear that there were some near misses already, as the branch that protruded over the road had already been hit, the marks of the impact clearly showing.

Following the video, which was also put online on this website, the Civil Protection Department cordoned off the area to avoid any mishaps and, this afternoon, chopped off the tree.

The tree was on private property.

Concern about protruding trees on Maltese roads has dramatically increased over the past day, after the accident which caused the death of two tourists and injured 50 others in Zurrieq.
