Waterpolo, Winter League: San Giljan crush Neptunes to register 38th consecutive win

San Giljan continued marching on in their quest for a continued clean sweep of local waterpolo titles when they thrashed their neighbours and rivals Neptunes Leo egas by thirteen goals to five in a totally one sided encounter. Marko Orlovic's side was superior in all departments with the high scoring Dino Zammit helping himself to no less than five goals while Ben Plumpton and Matthew Zammit scored a brace each. Jordan Camilleri was again the outstanding player for Neptunes scoring three times but the Balluta side were sorely outplayed losing all four sessions with the first and third particularly easy for San Giljan.

As usual San Ġiljan settled down immediately and scored three without reply in the first session thanks to Ben Plumpton, Andreas Galea and Darren Zammit. Neptunes fought back in the second session but only after Ben Plumpton and Dino Zammit from a penalty made it 5-0.

Jordan Camilleri with a wonderful back-hand scored Neptunes' first goal until Dino Zammit made it 6-1 with Jordan Camilleri making it 6-2. The third session went in similar vein to the first for San Ġiljan where they won 4-1.  Matthew Camilleri and Dino Zammit made it 8-2 with Ken Erdogan scoring a third for Neptunes, only for Matthew Zammit and Tristan Said to end the third session 10-3 for the Champions.

Neptunes started well in the last session with Jordan Camilleri scoring for Jovan Popovic's side but Paul Fava immediately scored for San Ġiljan. Dino Zammit scored with a beautiful lob to make it 12-4 for San Ġiljan and the same player added another goal seconds later with a fast break.  With just three seconds to go, Ken Erdogan scored a fifth for Neptunes. San Ġiljan and Sirens are now out of the play-offs after finishing first and second respectively, with Sliema who finished third playing Valletta whist Exiles who finished fifth will play Neptunes who finished one place above them.

Sliema cruise past hapless Exiles

Sliema Frank Salt Real Estate cruised to a relatively easy victory when they defeated their neighbours Exiles Jet Freight 11-5 with Exiles losing too many man up situations which they were made to pay for. Jerome Gabaretta was again the star player for Sliema scoring no less than four goals. Exiles also didn't profit from Michael Cordina being sent off with Timmy Sullivan also missing a penalty in the second session when the score was 2-4.

The first session ended 1-1 with Jerome Gabaretta putting Sliema ahead but Timmy Sullivan equalised. The second session was an animated affair as already indicated with Sliema winning 3-1. Michael Spiteri Staines, Zach Mizzi and David Fenech scored for Sliema with Timmy Sullivan grabbing a temporarary equalizer for Exiles.

In the third session, Sliema went further ahead scoring through Nicholas Bugelli and Jerome Gabaretta to register a four goal advantage for the final session. This was a high scoring affair ending 5-3 in favour of Sliema with Jerome Gabaretta and Mark Meli scoring twice with paul Carani adding the other. Exiles replied through Aurelian Cousin, Nicky paris and Mark Fenech but Sliema ended up easy winners by 11 goals to 5.

Birzebbugia confirmed First Division champions

Birzebbugia Freeport managed to win the First Division League at their first attaempt when they handed Marsaskala Transkripta their second defeat in as many games winning 5-4 in a close match. David Pace Lupi could have perhaps made life easier for the Southerners but he missed a penalty when the score was 2-2. However a tight third session gave Birzebbugia a slender victory.
