Rugby player dies suddenly, Malta weekend matches postponed

Wednesday, 18 April 2018, 13:48 Last update: about 7 years ago

Overseas rugby player Brewster Taber Hammond died suddenly over the weekend, aged 33, the Malta Rugby Football Union announced.
While he had not been part of our community for very long, Taber made a name for himself both on and off the pitch, not only as a stand out player and sportsman, but also as a joyful character who embodied the values of the rugby community. He was by all means a gentleman that many of us will regret not having the time to get to know better, the MRFU said.

Following Taber’s passing, the MRFU, along with the whole of the rugby community, felt it appropriate that this weekend’s fixtures be rescheduled to allow his friends and family to mourn privately.

All of this weekend’s fixtures have been rescheduled to the following weekend, 28 to 29 April.

In a statement by Steward Malta, Taber was remembered as the most passionate and driven of individuals, both in his private and professional career.

Upon starting his position as Prosthetics Lead at Karin Grech Hospital, it was immediately obvious that he was the most organized, passionate, caring and skilled prosthetist that the Maltese Community could have hope for.

He took on the challenge of patient care, organization and the complex logistics of his new position and within a few short months had succeeded in creating a service to be proud of. His obvious passion for life and for patient care showed in all aspects of his life, not only did all his patients have the highest respect for his clinical skills but also his level of personal engagement in their lives.

Taber will be greatly missed by all the amputee patients he cared for and by the staff at Medical Center Orthotics and Prosthetics at Karin Grech Hospital. This is a great loss for all, Steward Malta said.
