Dar Charles Miceli, a residence in Mosta for people who have successfully quit a drug habit, was officially opened today. It is named after social activist Charles Miceli, who passed away in March.
The home, which is run by Caritas Malta, will be open 24 hours a day.
Family Minister Michael Farrugia said the government will be paying €200,000 a year to help with the running of the residence. He said the government paid in excess of €8 million a year to help Church related organisations.
He praised Caritas for its work in society. He also saluted the memory of Charles Miceli who, he said, would have been proud to witness the latest statistics showing how material deprivation had decreased.
Caritas Director Leonid McKay said a concept dreamt up some months ago had now become a reality. The residence, he said, would help increase awareness and understanding of changing realities and prevent recovered drug addicts from relapsing.
Archbishop Charles Scicluna thanked Caritas for its work and the government for believing in and assisting such initiatives.
