Partit Demokratiku has expressed its support and full solidarity with victims of targeted and politically motivated abuse and harassment witnessed very publicly in recent days.
Freedom of expression is a sacred and unalienable principle of a democratic and modern society to be protected at all costs by the state institutions, PD said in a statement.
When hate speech becomes tolerated, a clear red line is breached causing national tension in a most self-destructive and self-defeating way.
Organisations such as Kenniesa and Occupy Justice are civil representatives of society. Any attempts at their intimidation are shameful and reprehensible. Partit Demokratiku condemns those heaping personal insults and abuse upon them in a populist fashion.
Similarly, the dead cat left on Labour MP Stefano Zrinzo Azzopardi's doorstep is reprehensible.
Further attacks on individuals, such as Tina Urso and Julian Sammut, deserve full condemnation, PD said.
Politically motivated violence and its promotion, whether physical or emotional, must immediately cease and desist.
Democracy is not mob violence, but popular consent and consensus. It is the responsibility of leadership figures to seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
Partit Demokratiku shall continue its struggle for independent institutions that uphold the interests of everybody instead of the few, and where nobody is afraid to speak their mind or hold a different opinion to the rest.
PD calls for maturity and respect for democracy and civil rights.
