The 500 new units of social housing which were announced yesterday by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat will not be area-specific, but constructed in a number of towns around Malta and Gozo.

This was revealed by Family Minister Michael Falzon in parliament this evening, where he was asked to elaborate on the project during parliamentary questions.

During his speech at yesterday's Labour Day mass meeting, Muscat said that he has asked the national fund for social development, that manages the funds from the IIP scheme, so that they give another €50 million to create another 500 social housing units for those in need.

This evening, Falzon explained that this project is "part of a holistic plan for social housing." He listed Qormi, Attard and Mqabba as some of the locations amongst others were the social housing is planned.

This project will be the second social housing project announced by the government in this legislature, with the first one planned to create 630 units. Muscat yesterday referred to these projects as "the largest social housing project of our time."
