Friday, 4 May 2018, 13:46 Last update: about 7 years ago

Pjazza Teatru Rjal today launched its artistic programme for 2018 and it is certainly an enriching contribution to Malta’s most important cultural milestone in recent history; the celebration of Valletta 2018.

“Culture is increasingly becoming a priority in our everyday lives. Our country’s cultural programme is enriched with numerous festivals and events for everyone to enjoy and appreciate. The variety and high quality of this ever-growing calendar is a clear sign that culture is increasingly becoming more accessible to the public and Pjazza Teatru Rjal’s artistic programme for this summer clearly fits the bill,” reiterated Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici during the launch.

Pjazza Teatru Rjal’s eclectic season covers most genres of music and dance, film, musical theatre, educational programmes and television shows. Besides numerous local productions that will feature the best of Maltese talent, this year’s programme will also see a star-studded line-up of top international artists performing at Pjazza Teatru Rjal. These include Igudesman & Joo, the extremely versatile Swingles choir, international Jazz artists such as Bertil Strandberg, Rino Cirinna and Stjepko Gut, Hungaro-Ukranian violinist of Eurovision fame Edvin Marton, Balázs Havasi – reputedly the world’s fastest pianist – and many others.

Executive Chairman of Arts Council Malta Albert Marshall said, “I’m proud that it was I who baptised this site Pjazza Teatru Rjal: Pjazza because this site serves as a hub designed as a catchment for people who come from all walks of life; Teatru because at this site we stage all genres of the performing arts; Irjal because at this site we experience a strong resonance of the past. Now that we can identify the advantages and disadvantages of the site, we look boldly at its future and see Pjazza Teatru Rjal reinvent itself.”

Following on from a very successful inaugural season in 2017, the Malta Concert Orchestra will offer a number of concerts that will surely appeal to everyone’s liking. The orchestra has also been fundamental to the success of the L-Għanja tal-Poplu – Festival tal-Kanzunetta Maltija so much that this year will see the introduction of a special edition for youths also with live musical accompaniment, courtesy of the Malta Concert Orchestra.

Chairman of Pjazza Teatru Rjal Charles Gatt said, “I would like to think that this year’s varied programme will appeal to everyone’s tastes. Whether you are one of the many thousands of patrons who have already been to Pjazza Teatru Rjal or whether this is going to be your first time, I invite everyone to join us this season for the high-level programme that we have in store for you.”
