Monday, 7 May 2018, 00:16 Last update: about 7 years ago

Hibernians     50     Caffe Moak Luxol     47

 (7-14, 6-14, 27-10, 10-9)

Hibs took the shortest path to win the league title, but, for the second time in three finals, Luxol were found wanting, and threw the match away. This time around they were in complete control till the interval. Their calm play unsettled their opponents, who were finding it difficult to keep up, and who fell further behind, as the game progressed. Then came the interval, and the Paolites were a transformed side. Coach, Sandro Farrugia's recipe worked wonders, and Hibs overran their adversaries, make up the solid deficit in just one session of play. The Paolites were back in arrears, but a good finish to the match ensured their victory, and a league title, after an absence of eight years. Luxol will surely be asking themselves whatever happened, as they could easily have forced the fourth match in the series. This also meant that Luxol were unable to match the same Hibs in a five straight league title run, as the Paolites had done, winning from 2006 to 2010, to set a record.

Luxol couldn't have started better, with a solid 10-0 run, as Sarah Pace opened with a triple. Hibs began to find their feet, and Sam Brincat, netted a trey. Luxol still held the edge, to hold on to their advantage. In the next period Hibs were still being subjected to a Luxol onslaught. A 9-2 run, with another Pace trey, left the Paolites behind. Then it was more Maria Brown points, as Luxol were enjoying a 28-13 interval advantage, with a bleak outlook facing Hibs.

This all changed around, as the Paolites came out full of fight, and Luxol were taken aback. Silvia Gambino sank a brace of triples, and Iona agius, off the bench, followed up with another. In between Kay Portelli also netted a Luxol triple, but Hibs were in full cry. An 11-2 run, as Emma Micallef also came off the bench, to sink two quick treys, had Hibs in front, for the first time. Pace netted a third triple, for Luxol, who twice tied the score, but a late Agius fast break gave Hibs a slight 40-38 advantage. In the last session Luxol again levelled the score, but Brincat, nailed a second triple. Luxol managed a 7-0 run. to forge ahead once more, but Hibs made a last effort, and it was left to Rachel Kehoe, to give them back their advantage, and late Brincat free shots ensured the Paolites' victory. as they celebrated their league title win, to add to their Louis Borg Cup success, earlier on in the season.

After the match it was presentation time, as the victorious Hibs side was presented with medals, Sam Brincat was given the MVP award, and skipper, Elena Cassar, was presented with the league trophy, by Sam Grech, the Mapfre MSV Life Executive Officer, along with the MBA general secretary, Joe Muscat.
