Stark divide on embryo protection bill persists as Parliament continues with second reading

Monday, 7 May 2018, 20:58 Last update: about 7 years ago

Parliament today continued with the second reading for the Embryo Protection Bill with several MPs having their say on the matter.

The clear divide between the Government and opposition side continued to resonate with controversial matters of embryo adoption and surrogacy being discussed on either side.

Nationalist MP Mario Galea pointed out that this bill could actually provide a window for abortion whilst Anthony Aguis Decelis emphasised that everyone had a choice and that the bill did not impose on anyone to do something they did not want to do.

Mario DeMarco also discussed the issue of surplus embryos noting that although the bill does mention the possibility of embryo adoption the market was not so forthcoming. As a result he said "who will decide what happens to them" if they are not adopted?

Several MPs also made reference to a document that was published a few days and tabled today during parliament by 100 academics from the University of Malta which concluded that the Embryo Protection Act gravely weakens the protection of the human embryo. A PL MP pointed out that out of the 100 academics only four were gynaecologists.
