PD not against development in Gozo, but this must not impinge on environment

The Partit Demokratiku said it is not against development in Gozo, but this must not impinge on the island’s natural charm and uniqueness.

In a statement, the PD said the proposed mega development at Hondoq ir-Rummien has been going through the application process rounds since before the year 2000. Successive refusals have not deterred the developers from pushing forth with re-applying for this exercise in property speculation over the years.

The massive development which is to see the creation of yacht marina, a hotel, villas, apartments, bungalows and maisonettes, with a total bed capacity that exceeds the combined population of Ghasri and San Lawrenz, with as many car spaces, would equate to the creation of a medium-sized town on a site of unparalleled scenic beauty boasting the cleanest waters on our islands. Add to that the 150 yachts, offices, shops and restaurants.

With 85% of the people of Qala being against this project, and with neither of the two big parties having ever pronounced themselves in favour or against this project shows political weakness at best and being potentially compromised at worst.

The PL, pre-2007, had been four-square against this project with party exponents adding their weight to its opposition, until its then leader, Alfred Sant, gave his blessing for the development of the Marina alone.

So Labour’s stance has, over the years, been piecemeal and equivocal. The PN’s stance has been even more shrouded in mystery, leaving everyone guessing.

Whilst Moviment Ħarsien Ħondoq became the main vehicle for public opposition to this project, a number of NGOs such as Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, Ramblers Association, Nature Trust, Friends of the Earth Malta and Din l-Art Ħelwa joined forces, calling on the planning authority to refuse the permit.

Partit Demokratiku is not against sustainable development in Gozo, especially one that creates jobs in Gozo. But as long as such development does not negatively impinge on Gozo’s uniqueness and charm. In addressing disused quarries, the policy must also be adhered to.

The application process is now undergoing technical and procedural summersaults between the PA, ERA and Planning Review Tribunal to the exasperation of the public.

Partit Demokratiku appealed to the government and PN to come clean once and for all and declare its official position on this mega-project. Standing on the fence at the expense of the public and the environment is politically irresponsible and immature, the PD said.
