President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca said today she was surprised to discover that her name was in some way associated with hate groups on social media and has taken immediate steps to ensure this ceases to be the case with immediate effect.

In a statement, Coleiro Preca said “it is an unfortunate reality that those active in public life can sometimes unwittingly find themselves in such groups”.

While being completely unaware of their contents, Coleiro Preca said she has absolutely no hesitation in dissociating herself from them.

The President said she has consistently and unreservedly condemned any type of bullying or threats of violence irrespective of their source and vociferously advocates that such abhorrent sentiments have no place in Maltese society.

On Tuesday, PN MP Jason Azzopardi called on the President to leave Labour groups on the social media which have shared threatening, insulting and aggressive images and comments against members of the Opposition as well as anti-corruption activists.

The President's association with one of the groups, Laburisti sal-Mewt, had been highlighted last year on Daphne Caruana Galizia's blog before the journalist was killed on 16 October.
