The University of Malta's Institute for European Studies and the European Direct Information Centre - University organised several events to commemorate Europe Day.

On Tuesday, the EDIC (hosted by the Institute) held its first Europe Day quiz night at Is-Suq tal-Belt in Valletta. Over 100 students participated in a lively evening answering questions on the EU, Eurovision, Champions League and European Cinema. The Alfred Sant kellu ragun team won the first prize of four €100 travel vouchers. Dr Elena Grech (head of the European Commission's Representation in Malta) joined Dr Mark Harwood (director of the Institute for European Studies) in launching the event.

The next day, Wednesday 9 May, marked Europe Day and several events were held on Campus. The Institute for European Studies and the EDIC participated in the European Food Festival organised by Jef Malta, while Dr Harwood formed part of the panel discussion on European Identity held on Campus. In the afternoon, the European Documentation Centre (within the Institute) hosted Jef's European Identity workshop while the EDIC sponsored the Vino e Vino event on Campus in the evening.

Europe Day marks the anniversary of the Schuman declaration which helped launch the European project. The Institute for European Studies and the EDIC-University thank Dr Grech and the European Commission for their support in organising these events.

The Europe Direct Information Centre was launched this year on Campus and is part of the network of Europe Direct centres to be found across Europe. These centres provide information, answer questions and organise events related to the EU.

The EDIC-University can be found within the Institute for European Studies and is reached on 2340 2998 or via email at [email protected]
