Speaker Anġlu Farrugia this evening said that a jacket must be worn by male MPs however a tie is optional. He introduced this dress code in parliament after Democratic Party MP Godfey Farrugia on Tuesday turned up in a polo shirt for last the parliamentary sitting.

Earlier today, this newsroom spoke with Godfrey Farrugia who said that it is honesty and integrity that makes one a gentleman, not wearing a jacket and a tie.

The Speaker in his ruling said that he was introducing a basic dress code for MPs so as to protect "the dignity of Parliament and MPs." In his ruling he also made reference to how women should wear. He said that female MPs have to observe a similar standard of dress.

Farrugia also quoted Erskine May, the parliamentary guide book of the House of Commons, which although it does not specify a particular dress code, it enphasises that MPs should dress appropriately.
