Did Minister Owen Bonnici mislead the House? – PD asks

Friday, 25 May 2018, 16:48 Last update: about 7 years ago

Partit Demokratiku asked today whether Minister Owen Bonnici misled the House of Representatives when he said all judges and magistrates supported him in the decision taken to grant warrants to two lawyers with a previous criminal conviction.

The PD was referring to a statement by the Association of Judges and Magistrates which denied that all the judiciary had advised Minister of Justice Dr Owen Bonnici to recommend and the President of the Republic to the two warrants, as the minister had implied to Parliament.

The Chamber of Advocates and former Chief Justice Silvio Camilleri had also given advice against the granting of the warrants.

The Code of Organisation and Civil Procedure states that "no person is entitled to obtain a warrant to practise law unless s/he is of good conduct and good morals”, PD said.

PD asked whether this is a case in which the House has been misled by the Minister.
