Urgent need for a proper waste management strategy – PD

The forthcoming discussion in Parliament on the Revision of the Magħtab Area Planning Strategy brings to the forefront the Waste Incinerator Project announced recently which Government is presenting as fait accompli, Partit Demokratiku said in a statement.

"We have the sorry situation where the Opposition Nationalist Party refused to appoint a representative, and the Prime Minister refused to allow Partit Demokratiku to appoint one," PD said.

Waste Management issues have now come to a head due to bad planning. Quick fix solutions are detrimental to our environment, health and quality of life.  We need to look at more environmentally friendly options.

Incineration results in a third of the waste ending up as hazardous or potentially toxic ash which has to be landfilled or exported.

Partit Demokratiku said it supports any conscientious initiative that lends towards the proper management of waste, but urges government to adopt a more structured approach considering the full the environmental and social impacts of the options in hand.

Partit Demokratiku believes that the country needs to tackle the issue of waste management through a modal shift based on lifestyle decisions and enhanced by sound policy. Throwing technological solutions at the problem is admitting that we have lost the battle for waste minimisation and reuse.

Partit Demokratiku believes that we cannot talk about economic success if we keep on degrading our environment rather than safeguarding it for future generations.
