Tuesday, 5 June 2018, 12:37 Last update: about 7 years ago

The agility of Spiderman as he swings across New York City, Black Panther racing across the savannah, Thor wielding his thunderous hammer from Asgard and the Avengers having combined super forces to take on the invincible Thanos. Faster than a speeding bullet, Superheroes show no signs of stopping as they continue to hit the cinema screens. Everyone has a favourite Superhero/ heroine or super villain and this superhero could become part of the Superheroes in Science project.

The Superheroes in Science project is an initiative to involve students in the creation of science based exhibits on the real science behind superheroes. Students will be given the possibility of creating science exhibits pertaining to the real science behind superheroes and how students can apply scientific principles, discoveries and innovations. The aim of this project is to stimulate the students 'sense of curiosity and fun, to discover and research science through the world of Superheroes, their super abilities and gadgets.

It is no secret that many superheroes are in fact scientists from Barry Allen (The Flash) is a forensics scientist, Peter Parker (Spider-Man) is an accomplished science student and Tony Stark (Iron Man) is a mechanical engineer.

The Superheroes in Science Project is open to students who are in Forms 1 to 4 (Grades 7 to 10). Students can participate individually or as a team, with a maximum number of three students in a team.  All projects, whether in the form of an experiment or of a practical demonstration, must be submitted, together with the necessary documentation which is available on the website: http://superheroscience.info/  by the deadline date of October, 26th 2018, therefore, during the scholastic year 2018-2019.

Projects submitted can be in the form of an Experiment or as a Practical/ Visual Demonstration and will be judged at the individual schools.

The finalist projects chosen by the schools will be brought to the Esplora Interactive Science Centre and exhibited during the Superheroes in Science Event taking place on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th November 2018. Finalists will be given an opportunity to present their work to the public. Participation is free and Superhero themed prizes are to be won.

Whereas the caped crusaders battle crime, leap the tallest buildings and battle against all odds to save the world not all superheroes wear capes... some were lab coats. So bring out the super scientist in you! Good Luck in your venture but most importantly have fun!!
