An application has been filed to construct a what the government is describing as a "promenade" on a road in Rabat overlooking Mtarfa, on ODZ land.

The application, filed by government, will see landscaping works - including alterations to the carriageway, construction of a promenade, installation of infrastructural services, paving works, installation of street furniture and provision of parking spaces on ODZ land.

The site, is Triq Tat-Tabija, Triq Gheriexem, Rabat, Malta.

Plans show a number of benches to be placed along the future promenade, which will mainly be paved, and will include some green areas. The site area, as indicated in the public application form, is 2,760 sqm and the area is mainly used as a road, and as fields. The application form also indicates that a felling of trees would be required. A railing will also be installed on the edge overlooking ODZ land along the promenade.

Contacted by The Malta Independent, Rabat Mayor Charles Azzopardi said that he is in favour of this project.

“Besides helping the infrastructure of the locality and the area in question, this ambitious project will help the residents through the allocation of more parking spaces.”

The Mayor explained that parking is a big issue in Rabat, noting the limited spaces available.

“While the number of residents is always increasing.  A promenade like the one planned is very much needed,” he said.

The placement of the promenade will more than likely result in more residents taking walks along the outskirts of the locality.
