MCAST reviewing synoptic dates in cases where unit results not issued in time

Tuesday, 19 June 2018, 18:25 Last update: about 7 years ago

MCAST has said that in cases where the results for particular units were not finished in time for the pre-set synoptics, the synoptic dates are being reviewed to minimize the impact on students and allow them more time to study,

This newsroom recently reported that MCAST students are yet to receive their exam results even though resits were less than a week away. In previous academic years, the resits, known as synoptic assessments at MCAST, took place during the first weeks of September, as is the case with most other educational institutions.

MCAST said in a statement that it employs a system of continuous assessment whereby the final mark is not determined only by the last assessment, but by carrying out ongoing evaluation throughout the academic year, it said in a statement.

MCAST said that "in this system, students would know before the last assessment whether they will be making use of the synoptic. The final assignment is therefore a small proportion of the mark when compared to the overall assessment. MCAST does not employ the model of an exam and a corresponding resit."

MCAST said that students at the Institute for Business, Marketing and Commerce (IBMC) were given the synoptic time table before the results were issued. "In those cases where the results for particular units were not finished in time for the pre-set synoptics, the synoptic dates are being reviewed to minimize the impact on students and allow them more time to study and prepare. We aim to ensure that there is a wide gap between the issuing of the results and the date of the synoptic examinations.  This will also give students time to have tutorial sessions with their lecturers in order to receive the necessary feedback on their work prior to sitting for the synoptic.  "

"A circular was issued to the students in question today to inform them of the latest developments and provide reassurance. "
