A motorcyclist died Sunday afternoon after losing control of the bike he was riding in the tunnels near the University, the police said.

The police initially said that the biker, Boris Cini, a 43-year-old of Balzan was certified dead on site, but in another statement said he died at Mater Dei Hospital.

The accident happened at around 4pm.

He is the 12th road victim of the year.

A woman, who was riding pillion, was taken to hospital for treatment. The police later said that the woman, a 30-year-old from Poland, is being treated for grievous injuries.

Magistrate Monica Vella is conducting an inquiry.
