Basketball: Malta men women to play in the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries this week

The senior men and women national teams will be back in action this week when they will compete in the FIBA 2018 European Championships for Small Countries to be played in San Marino and Ireland respectively between Tuesday 26th June and Sunday 1st July.

The men side, under the guidance of coach Andrea Paccarie will travel to San Marino where seven countries will be competing with Malta drawn in Group B made up of 3 teams.

Malta will start of their group phase commitments by playing Andorra on the opening day on 26th June and then face Ireland on the following day. Group A is made up of San Marino, Norway, Gibraltar and Moldova.

The squad has been training hard in the last weeks and is made up of Keith Dimech, David Bugeja, Roderick Vella, Peter Shoults, Shawn Pace, Kurt Xuereb, Matthew Gouder, Kurt Cassar, Jacob Formosa and the Falzon brothers, Aaron and Tevin. Samuel Deguara should be joining the squad in San Marino ahead of the European Championship which will have the group phase up till Thursday 28th June and then proceed to the finals stage up till Sunday 1st July. 

The city of Cork in Ireland will be the destination for the women national team as they will be defending the gold medal won two years ago.

New coach Enrico Gilardi will be travelling with the following squad: Sophie Abela, Samantha Brincat, Josephine Grima, Christina Grima, Stephanie Demartino, Christina Curmi, Asleigh Vella, Leanne Duncan, Hannah Al Tumi, Maria Bonett, Gaby Mifsud and Kristy Galea.

Malta were drawn in Group A and will tip-off against possible favourites Denmark on June 26th and then will face Moldova and Gibraltar respectively in the next two days. Luxembourg, Cyprus, Norway and Ireland are in Group B. The format here is similar to the men’s championship with the final games played on Sunday 1st July.
