Muscat’s potential candidature for EU Commission President is ‘inappropriate’ - EPP Vice-President

It is ‘inappropriate’ for Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to be even mentioned as a potential President of the European Commission given the serious allegations against the government, the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and his refusal to appear before the European Parliament, Dara Murphy, Vice President of the European People’s Party (EPP) has said.

Murphy, who is also responsible for the 2019 European Election, was asked to comment on the rumours that Muscat could potentially be the lead candidate for the post for The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) political group.

“There are very serious questions that are not being answered by the Maltese government,” Murphy explained. "Muscat has refused to address the serious allegations against his government and the assassination of a journalist in front of the democratically elected European Parliament. This is something he must do whether he decides to run for the post or not."

“The starting point for Muscat has to be far greater accountability and openness to the European institutions. Ultimately it is the European Parliament which is vital to his possible election. While there are some questions with regard to the rule of law and freedom of the press, it is clear that the death of a journalist is unacceptable and takes priority,” he continued.

“We are concerned about the rumours regarding names being proposed for the post from other political groups.”

"Obviously, it is the choice of the S&D group, and we will engage in debate with whoever the candidate will be."

Muscat, who has long held that he would only serve as PM for two legislatures, has consistently been touted for a number of top EU posts following his exit from local politics, including the President of the Commission and the President of the Council.

While concerns over his continued backing of his Chief of Staff Keith Schembri and Minister Konrad Mizzi seemed to have previously fallen upon deaf ears within the European forum, the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia appears to have eviscerated any hopes Muscat may have held.
