A Serbian national with no fixed address this morning was accused of attempting to kill businessman Hugo Chetcuti.

The arraignment took place just 12 hours after the stabbing in the Seafood and Cocktail establishment in Pacebille on Friday night.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Neville Camilleri, heard that relatives, security guards and the police followed the suspect, Bojan Cmelik, on a description given by a witness. They followed him to St Helen Street in Sliema, where he assaulted the police and was arrested.

Apart from the attempted murder charges, Cmelik was also accused of threatening and attacking police officers, disobeying their orders and carrying a knife without the necessary licence.

Bail was not requested.

Inspector Nicolai Sant prosecuted.

Sara Mifsud and Joe Giglio are appearing parte civile, while Ishmael Psaila is legal aid.
