Saturday, 7 July 2018, 13:30 Last update: about 7 years ago

The National Pool Complex at Tal-Qroqq was a hive of activity between 28th June and 1st July due to the National Swimming Championships that each year are organised by the ASA of Malta.

This year’s competition saw the participation of ten local clubs: Aqua Academy Exiles, Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club, Inspire Swimming Club, Marsaskala Sports Club, Marsaxlokk ASC, Neptunes WPSC, San Giljan SW Elite, Sirens ASC, Sliema ASC and Verdala International Swim Club.

These clubs fielded 238 swimmers (120 women and 118 men) who between themselves effected 917 individual and 51 relay starts.

Each day of the competition has provided beautiful swims with the culmination of the evening being the relay events where selected participants from each club provided a nice atmosphere as apart from fighting against the stop watch they are also positively fuelled by the competition and rivalry between the clubs.

Of all the events one cannot but mention the National Records established by Thomas Wareing in the 100m Backstroke – 59:93; 200m Backstroke – 2:08:87 (which is also a qualifying time for GSSE 2019); 400m Individual Medley 4:42.02 and Mikhail Umnov 2:21.40 as well as the Age Group D records effected by Andrea Mallia in the 200m Breaststroke – 2:28.92 and Kyle Buhagiar in the 200m Freestyle 1:58.10.
