The elderly living in care homes in Msida, Mosta and Mtarfa are going to have the opportunity to become more familiar with the use of modern technology and of the internet, announced Parliamentary Secretary for Persons with Disability and Active Ageing Anthony Agius Decelis on Monday morning.
Speaking at the Msida Home for the Elderly, Agius Decelis explained that the elderly residents of these homes will be given lessons on how to use a tablet and the internet. These lessons will include training on how to send an email, use social media and buy online.
Furthermore, those who complete this course will be allowed to keep the tablet that they are taught on. The Welfare Committee, which is responsible for this course, through these lessons is encouraging the elderly to continue improving their knowledge on today’s technology, Agius Decelis said.
Speaking to this newspaper, Agius Decelis said that the aim of this initiative is to teach the elderly who are currently residing in care homes so they have access to modern technology and be able to communicate more effectively with their loved ones.
Speaking about the limitations faced when moving into such a care home, Agius Decelis said “we want to break the barriers and we want to give a better quality of life to the elderly that are in these homes”.
