Thursday, 19 July 2018, 09:08 Last update: about 7 years ago

The MCAST Advanced Diploma in Environmental Sustainability and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Environmental Engineering courses offered at MCAST provide students with the opportunity to develop and nurture new knowledge and skills within the environmental sector.

There is a growing need for environmental practitioners who have received training that enables them to manage environmental issues. This is a result of an improved environmental awareness and the growing body of environmental legislation and policies, which have fostered more investment in this sector.

The MCAST Institute of Applied Sciences offers a number of courses in the environmental and sustainability fields which offer students the ability to undertake training and acquire green skills important for the sector.

Students at the Institute of Applied Sciences benefit from vocational learning approaches that include strong practical training. In fact, the Institute hosts several laboratories with modern scientific and technical equipment used in various scientific and technological fields. Through practical training and opportunities to work with the industry, during apprentices and work placements, students strongly benefit from the vocational learning experience at the Institute.

A degree in environmental engineering opens students up to numerous professional opportunities in planning, construction, water, energy and waste management and in environmental protection.

Graduates from the Institute of Applied Sciences environmental engineering courses have found employment with various companies and organisations working in a wide range of areas including environmental monitoring and protection, biodiversity conservation and water and energy engineering in private companies. This may be attributed to the fact that the courses delivered by the Institute provide the students with applied knowledge and a wide suite of practical skills to work, among others, in biodiversity conservation and natural resources management, pollution control, energy, water and waste management and environmental monitoring.

The Institute also prides itself with a strong applied research programme in the environmental sector and the lecturing staff work with key authorities and organisations to develop new solutions for sustainability, while also offering exciting opportunities for students.

The MCAST Advanced Diploma in Environmental Sustainability (MQF level 4) provides training for employment as an environmental technologist or analyst. The student will learn about environmental monitoring, biodiversity, ecology and natural resources management, current legislation and best practices in the management of waste and pollution and in achieving efficiency in resource utilisation. The course also involves a period of work-related experience in the environmental sector. After having completed the Advanced Diploma students can read for a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Environmental Engineering (MQF level 6).

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Environmental Engineering (MQF level 6) offers an opportunity for prospective students to further their training in environmental engineering to manage and provide solutions to the changing landscape of today's environmental challenges. The course of studies includes practical investigations, work placements, projects, lectures, tutorials and a final research dissertation. At the end of the programme, students will be able to carry out water, energy and environmental audits and basic environmental impact assessments (EIA). Graduates will also gain scientific and critical problem-solving skills necessary in the management of ecological and technical challenges through the implementation of monitoring, logging, data management and interpretation of various environmental parameters.

MCAST will be receiving applications for its full-time courses starting from Monday, 23 July.
