Monday, 23 July 2018, 07:12 Last update: about 7 years ago

Two women were killed this morning in a residence in Gharghur in what appears to have been a domestic incident.

The two women were found in the residence's washroom, covered in blood after they were both stabbed.

One of them, aged 74, was certified dead on site while the other, aged 71, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. She died a few hours later.

The woman who died on site was the assailant's aunt, while the one who died in hospital was his mother.

It is understood that the argument rose after the man confronted the two women on suspicions that they were putting tranquillisers in his coffee.

One man, 42 years old, has been arrested. He lived in the same residence with the two women.

It is understood that the suspect gave himself up to the police.

The incident took place in Fidiel Zarb Lane just after 6.30am.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit is also on site conducting an inquiry. She appointed several experts to assist her in drawing up a report.

The last double killing that occurred in Malta took place last November in Attard.

Angelo Mangion, 58, from Qormi was killed on site while, Raymond Grima, who is 61 years old and resides in Iklin, was taken to hospital and died four months later.
