Saturday, 4 August 2018, 10:12 Last update: about 7 years ago

The Gharghur Local Council does not want the waste-to-energy incinerator to be located in Maghtab, a press statement by the council said.

Back in February 2018,  Environment Minister Jose Herrera said that a 5000 square meter waste-to-energy facility was planned to be built in Maghtab and running by 2023, which will address 40 per cent of Malta's total waste usage. Herrera had said that the facility, which is expected to cost about €120 million, and will be constructed through a public-private partienrship, will be based on a technology known as 'Moving Grate Combustion'.

While stating that the Minister informed them of government's plan to have it situated in Maghtab, the council said that in principle, they do not agree in principle that the incinerator be located there, as they believe it will negatively affect the air quality in their locality.

The council said it will continue to follow the news on this project, and when the proposal reaches consultation phase the council will provide their opinions on the matter. The council said that it will appoint a member to attend the PA Council meetings to object if needed.
