A 48-year-old Englishman was injured in Xlendi this afternoon after a bollard crumbled and fell through the canopy of a restaurant he was at on Triq San Xmun in Xlendi. 

The accident happened at around 1.10pm in St Simon Street, which is the road that overlooks the bay, the police said.

The man was taken to Gozo general Hospital where he was certified as having suffered grievous injuries.

Magistrate Paul Coppini is conducting an inquiry.
