Members of the Civil Protection were involved in a delicate operation on Saturday night to rescue a flamingo that had become entangled on a high tension electricity cable near Popeye’s Village.

Unfortunately, the bird died on Sunday as a result of its injuries.

Upon receiving the call on Saturday, the Civil Protection Department responded by sending a hydraulic platform, one officer, and two firefighters from Xemxija Fire Station.

The CPD explained in a Facebook post that this was a delicate and risky operation.

Enemalta workers shut down the power lines and ensured that no residual electricity remained in the cables before handing over to the CPD.

The firefighters donned special protective clothing before bringing the injured bird down.

Once recovered, the bird was handed over to members of Birdlife Malta, and it was later seen by a vet. A spokesperson for Birdlife Malta later confirmed that the bird had died as a result of the injuries it had sustained to its wings when it flew into the cables.
