Woman who ordered cannabis grass by post remanded in custody

A 29-year-old woman who ordered drugs by post was remanded in custody on Sunday, after being charged with importation of drugs.

A court heard how the police used a decoy package after Mandy Cassar, of Madliena, ordered 600 grams of cannabis grass.

The police, having been alerted by the customs department, replaced the drugs with a decoy package, which led them to the accused.

Police Inspector Joseph Xerri, prosecuting, said Cassar not only received the package, but also opened it and handled the contents.

The inspector said the original package contained 3,000 joints, which meant that it was not for personal use.

Lawyer Franco Debono, appearing for Cassar, did not contest the validity of arrest. However he argued against keeping a woman who was currently presumed as innocent under arrest. He also pointed out that the accused has a clean criminal record, lives in Malta and has a job.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud turned down the request for bail on the grounds that other witnesses need to testify.
