Micallef, Bezzina take overall honours at Eurosport Birkirkara St. Joseph 5K Road Running Series

Monday, 20 August 2018, 10:06 Last update: about 7 years ago

The Eurosport Birkirkara St. Joseph 5k Road Running Series came to a close this week, when the third and final race of the Series took place in Mtarfa.  Despite being held in summer and characterised by hot and humid conditions, the three race Series maintained its popularity and attracted a large and consistent participation throughout.  The last race of the Series saw the overall winners being crowned, this ranking being a result of the timings achieved in all three races.

Lisa Bezzina continued to show her prowess and dominance throughout the whole series winning all three races, clocking her best time for the 2018 series in the last race.  The podium trio for the last two races was made up of Margaret Seguna and Tara Abdilla, however in the final Ranking the podium was taken up by Lisa Bezzina, Tara Abdilla and Joelle Cortis. This stems from Cortis' participation in all three races whilst Seguna took part in two.

With last year's winner Charlton Debono winning the first race, Debono was considered a favourite to win the Series, despite being closely followed by Luke Micallef. Debono's non-participation in the following races saw the Series miss out on a potentially interesting duel between him and Micallef especially due to Micallef's registering improved timings at each race.   Rising through the ranks was Dillon Cassar who was hot on Micallef's heels and securing a podium place in each race.  Third and fourth place was a constant battle between Stefan Azzopardi and Mark Herrera with the latter beating Azzopardi for third place in the final race.  The ongoing action between the two resulted in just two seconds separating them in the overall rankings and Azzopardi taking third place on the overall winner's podium.

Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club President Raymond Grech presented trophies and medals to Age Group and Overall Winners at the end of the race.  The Club would like to thank Transport Malta, Mtarfa Local Council and members of the Police Force (Motor Traffic Division), volunteers and medical staff who provided support for the Series.

The Club's next athletic commitments will take place between the 23rd and 25th November when the Eurosport Malta International Challenge Marathon takes place followed by the Eurosport Fleur-de-Lys 5k and 10k Road Races take place.
