A €155,000 project which will create a public space equipped with an outdoor gym and a playground for children on a separate level is being funded by the Planning Authoritys Development Planning Fund.

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and the Property Market Chris Agius yesterday visited the project in Marsascala.

The Development Planning Fund makes funds available to local councils so that these can implement important projects for their communities. Just this year, this fund has led to the investment of more than €2.5 million in projects in several localities around Malta, and the fund currently has a balance of €27.4 million which are available for use by local councils.

Minister Borg said that now that the central government will be taking the responsibility for roads with an investment of €700 million, he looks forward to seeing more local councils proposing other projects for the benefit of their communities and localities – public space projects, social projects as well as environmental projects.

PS Agius stressed the importance of the different schemes often launched by the Planning Authority, including the Regularisation scheme and the Parking Contribution scheme, which make space for opportunities such as this one for the benefit of the residents of our country’s communities.

He encouraged local councils to continue proposing similar projects so that the benefits can finally reach our communities.

Marsascala mayor Mario Calleja said that as a result of this new playground and gym, the local council will be fighting obesity while ensuring that the playground is made accessible so that it can be enjoyed by all children.
