The rebuilding of the slip road connecting the Marsa Hamrun Bypass to the Mriehel Bypass is proceeding ahead of schedule and Infrastructure Malta said it will be reopening it for daytime use as from tomorrow, Tuesday 11 September.

The slip road exit from the northbound carriageway of the Marsa Hamrun Bypass to the beginning of the Mriehel Bypass was closed in the early hours of Monday morning. Infrastructure Malta and its contractors immediately started the necessary works to replace its foundations and resurface it with new layers of asphalt, as part of the project to widen the Marsa-Hamrun Bypass to six lanes.

The road was originally planned to remain closed until Friday, at all hours. However, the agency increased the resources allocated to this work and rescheduled it to start earlier to be able to keep the road open during the day and resume works at night only. As a result, the road will be re-opened on Tuesday morning. The remaining works will resume at night, to be completed later this week.  

At the same time, during the next few weeks, Infrastructure Malta is also carrying out several other works during the night, to complete the Marsa-Hamrun Bypass upgrade project, the second phase of the Marsa Junction Project as well as another project launched earlier this summer to improve the connections between Triq Aldo Moro (old matchsticks factory area), Triq Dicembru 13 and the Marsa-Hamrun Bypass. These overnight works, including the laying of the final asphalt surfaces of the upgraded roads and junctions, will require partial lane closures during the night as well.

Lanes closed during the night will be reopened every morning before 0600hrs. Road users are encouraged to carefully follow the signposted directions along the route or to use alternative routes, to reduce delays and other difficulties.

Infrastructure Malta is coordinating these works with Transport Malta’s traffic management team and with the Police. Several officers are dispatched to this area to assist and guide road users in difficulty.

Fredrick Azzopardi, Infrastructure Malta’s Chief Executive Officer, thanked road users for their cooperation and attention during the implementation of these projects, and the employees of the agency and its contractors for working to complete the required works as soon as possible. “These projects form part of our ongoing effort to continue improving the efficiency, safety, quality and sustainability of the Maltese road network. We are committed to complete the ongoing upgrades along this busy route in Marsa, Santa Venera and Qormi within a few weeks.”

“Later this month, the Marsa Ħamrun Bypass upgrade will be completed, opening up six lanes instead of the existing four. Parts of Triq Diċembru 13 and Triq Aldo Moro will have more new lanes as well, to continue reducing travelling difficulties to and from the southern part of Malta,” Inġ. Azzopardi said.
