Thursday, 13 September 2018, 10:20 Last update: about 7 years ago

The University of Malta is offering a new full-time course leading to the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering - Biomechanics. This is being offered as an interfaculty programme of the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, starting in October.

The general objective of this programme is to strengthen and develop Science & Technology capacity in biomedical engineering. BME integrates physical, mathematical and life sciences with engineering principles, for the study of biology, medicine and health systems, and for the application of technology to improve health and quality of life. Trained and qualified BME professionals are required worldwide within health-care systems in order to design, evaluate, regulate, acquire, maintain, manage and train on safe medical technologies.

The biomedical engineering industry is critically important due to technological development and the potential of new techniques to enhance cure, care and rehabilitation. This represents a major step forward in terms of healthcare and quality of life. BME is fundamental for a variety of highly innovative technologies, products and processes of the healthcare sector, and as a fast growing multidisciplinary specialisation it generates. Among other considerations it can generate high added value with minimum demand for natural resources (a crucial issue for Malta).

This new M.Sc. Biomedical Engineering course will provide career opportunities and access to further study in the vast healthcare area. Abilities gained during the course are generic skills that do not apply only to the field of biomedical engineering but can be transferred to any other engineering and medical activities.

It will provide students with multi-disciplinary scientific knowledge in engineering, biomedical and scientific fields required for the complete understanding, analysis and advancement of Biomedical Engineering with particular emphasis to health care.

Students, engineers, medics, scientists and health care graduates, will be provided with all necessary skills, to augment and advance their capacity, thereby providing a platform for collaborative work in the multidisciplinary BME area. The programme, spread over four semesters, is based on the expansion of engineering skills applied to biological systems that will encourage the innovative and creative approach to problem-solving.

The course will provide an academic multidisciplinary content, as well as an opportunity to develop a common language that will improve the communication between the two different fields - medicine and engineering. Students completing this programme will develop an understanding of the latest research and concepts of medical and health care, together with newest digital technologies and theories applied in the health care systems.

Applications are open only until the end of this month and those interested are encouraged to apply immediately.
