Friday, 21 September 2018, 00:14 Last update: about 7 years ago

Top-seeded Dominic Thiem reached the quarterfinals of the St. Petersburg Open with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday.

The Austrian player's next opponent will be eighth-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia, who prevailed against Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 6-4.

Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny retired from tennis after losing 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-3 to fifth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain.

The 36-year-old Youzhny won 10 tour titles and reached a career-high ranking of eighth in 2008.

Defending champion Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia progressed by beating Guido Pella 6-4, 6-4.

Dzumhur landed 70 percent of his first serves as he set up a meeting with Stan Wawrinka.

Nineteen-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov defeated Matteo Berrettini of Italy 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-0. He next plays Martin Klizan.

No 2 seed Tsitsipas blows match point and exits Moselle Open

Second-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas squandered a match point and was upset by Ricardas Berankis in the second round of the Moselle Open on Thursday.

Tsitsipas missed the chance in the second-set tiebreaker and ultimately lost 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-3 against the 103th-ranked Lithuanian player. Tsitsipas hit 17 aces but dropped his serve three times.

Lucas Pouille, who helped France qualify for the Davis Cup final last week, withdrew from the Moselle Open with a back injury and was replaced in the main draw by lucky loser Gregoire Barrere.

Bertens, Minella advance to quarterfinals at Korea Open

Second-seeded Kiki Bertens advanced to the quarterfinals of the rain-hit Korea Open by beating Dalila Jakupovic 6-4, 7-5 Thursday.

Bertens broke the Slovenian player's serve at 5-5 in the second set and held in the next game.

Also, Mandy Minella beat Australian qualifier Priscilla Hon 6-4, 6-3. The 20-year-old Hon was trying to make it to the Seoul quarterfinals for the second straight year as a qualifier.

Persistent rain throughout the afternoon delayed the start of four second-round matches.

A match between two former champions, Agnieszka Radwanska and Irina-Camelia Begu, was suspended late Thursday with Begu leading 6-4, 4-3. When play resumed, Begu completed a 6-4, 6-3 win.

Rain postponed a match between top-seeded Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, and Ekaterina Alexandrova. It was scheduled to be played Friday along with four quarterfinals.

Giorgi ousts top seed Wozniacki to reach Tokyo quarters

Unseeded Camila Giorgi rallied from a break point down in the final set to beat two-time defending champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 and advance to the Pan Pacific Open quarterfinals on Thursday.

Trailing 2-0 in the final set, Giorgi broke back immediately and won six of the last eight games.

The Italian finished with 45 winners to Wozniacki's 14.

It was Giorgi's third win over Wozniacki, all on hard courts, but her first win over a top-10 players in four years.

Wozniacki found her game in the second set, saving all nine break points she faced — including one in the first game and five at 1-1 — to send the match the distance.

The Dane started the quicker of the two in the third set, winning eight of the first nine points to build a 2-0 lead but Giorgi fought back to set up a quarterfinal clash with wild card Victoria Azarenka.

Azarenka beat seventh-seeded Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-2 for her first top-20 win since March.

Also, unseeded Donna Vekic came from a double break down in the second set to defeat Johanna Konta 6-3, 7-5 to reach her fifth quarterfinal of the year.

Eighth-seeded Barbora Strycova outlasted Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5 and will face U.S. Open champion and local favorite Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals on Friday.
