BOV Premier League: Leaders Gzira face tough test against resurgent Birkirkara

Another interesting programme of Premier League football is in store at the weekend between today and Sunday.

League leaders Gzira, the only unbeaten side after the opening four matches, will be facing a tough test against joint second placed Birkirkara.

Sliema and Balzan, also second placed, are expected to keep the pace at the top as they face Tarxien and Pieta H. respectively.

Hamrun, Hibs and Floriana will be eyeing a return to winning form, while Valletta should continue on the road to full recovery as they will be after a third consecutive win.

The top match of the weekend, however, is the Gzira-Birkirkara encounter to be played on Sunday.

Gzira United have had an excellent start having collected 10 points from their opening four matches. They beat Tarxien, Sliema and Hibernians as well as having drawn against Hamrun to remain the only unbeaten side in the competition so far.

It is no secret that the Maroons are seeking pastures new this season following last year's third place which landed them in the Europa League and if they maintain the current trend, I have no doubt that they will be successful in their attempt to go one better this season.

On their path this weekend, however, they seem to have the toughest test so far as they take on Birkirkara, just one point behind them in the standings and full of enthusiasm after their 2-0 win against Floriana last week.

The Stripes were not so convincing in that match, but what was more important for them was the return to winning form after their disastrous 0-3 defeat at the hands of Valletta the previous week.

This match will not be easy for the Stripes. They are aware that Gzira are no fluke, and after Sliema and Hibernians, the Maroons now seek the scalp of another top club challenging for the title.

Balzan and Sliema will be aiming to maintain the pace at the top, whatever happens in the match between Gzira and Birkirkara.

Balzan should be too strong for newcomers Pieta Hotspurs, even if the latter have proved to be a tough nut against all the opponents they have faced.

Balzan have shown great improvement following their first day defeat against Birkirkara. They are already the top scoring side in the league with 12 goals in four matches and the Hotspurs are aware what they will be facing.

Sliema should also be considered as favourites to beat Tarxien.

The Blues did well to beat St Andrews at the weekend, thus cancelling the memories of their previous defeat at the hands of neighbouring rivals Gzira.

But they have to be aware of Tarxien's threat. The latter have had a more or less satisfying start with two wins from four matches, and could also offer some strong opposition.

Hamrun, who suffered their first defeat against the Rainbows the past weekend, will now be facing Mosta and they are expected to go all out to gain the three points which will move them further up the standings.

Mosta have also had a satisfying start with two wins from four matches and I will not be surprised were they to upset the Spartans.

Valletta went on the rampage the past weekend, as they beat Qormi 6-0 for their second consecutive win. Now they face bottom club Senglea who only obtained their first point last weekend after a 1-1 draw against Pieta. Of course, I cannot see the citizens failing in their quest for the three points.

Hibernians will also be eyeing a victory as they play against St Andrews this evening. After last week's 3-2 defeat at the hands of Gzira, the Paolites must win the three points to keep in touch with the leaders.

St Andrews are aware that it will be no easy task but they will be doing their utmost to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat.

Floriana have had a very difficult start to the season and at present, they lie in an unusual 11th place on just 3 points from four matches.

The Greens must certainly feel disappointed, but they seem to have a relatively good chance to return to winning form as they take on Qormi, just one point above them in 10th place.

Qormi were rattled last weekend as they suffered a heavy 0-6 defeat against champions Valletta. One still has to see whether they will be able to forget all about that defeat after just one week.
