Surprise league leaders Santa Lucija kept their commanding role on top of the standings, even after being held by Sirens in a keenly contested match.

Both teams have lots of individual flair and yesterday they produced some good football in a match which wasa delight to watch. Santa Lucija were the better team and deserved their half time lead.

But toin the second half Santa Lucija eased their pressure as Sirens grew in composure, not only to equalise but almost snatched a late winner too. Both sides hit the woodwork and all in all a draw is a fair result, as both teams remain unbeaten and in the hunt for ambitious targets.

Pembroke A-Lija A               3-3

Referee: Daniel Scerri

Scorers: L.J. Schembri 11' (L), T. Fenech 28' (P), J.P. Mifsud Triganza 34', 48' (P), L. Pedro Gusso 62' (L), K. Kuroki 81' (L')

Pembroke lost a good opportunity to storm to the top of the standings when they failed to beat Lija, even though enjoying a 3-1 lead early in the second half. But a stubborn Lija side, stil unbeaten so far like their opponents Pembroke, had other ideas as they kept believing in their qualities and they finally were rewarded.

It was a spectacular match to say the least, with Lija taking an early lead but Pembroke, with Wilmesen and Mifsud Triganza in full splendour, turned the tide in their favour with three well taken goals.

Maybe Pembroke sat on their laurels too much in advance after building a 3-1 lead, and Lija punished them with a gallant display to bounce back and snatch a 3-3 draw.

Gudja U-Marsa       0-0

The draw fever that has swept across this opening start of the First Division League knows no bounds, after yesterday scoreless draw between Gudja and Marsa. It was the third draw of the day, the 18th game so far this season.

Gudja deserved something more than the mere point earned. But Marsa’s stubburn resistance especially in the second half, gave the Redblues a precious draw.

Gudja still unbeaten so far this season, were hoping for something more rewarding, but had to settle for a draw their fourth so far this season.

Gudja had the best scoring chances with Marsa rarely having a glimpse of goal, but in the end it was a point apiece, for yet another time.
