The Valletta Local Council will be providing free transport for elderly residents and others with mobility problems.
The service was launched on Tuesday morning by Valletta Mayor Alexiei Dingli and Chevalier Maurice Mizzi, the director of Continental Cars Ltd, which donated two vehicles for the scheme.
Professor Dingli said 40% of Valletta’s residents are elderly people so the council felt the need to introduce the scheme.
The mayor said the service, which will be operated by the local council during office hours, will transport the elderly and people with mobility issues within the capital city and also to the Floriana Health Centre, helping people keep their medical appointments.
Dingli told The Malta Independent that, if they choose to take the bus, elderly people and people with mobility issues would still have to walk to a bus stop. If they make use of other options they will have to pay, he said, adding that most of those who will make use of this service are pensioners.
A similar service was launched late last year by the Copsicua Local Council.
