Malta will be trying to obtain a positive result when it meets Hungary on Friday at the Centenary Stadium (kick off 5pm).

It is the last but one in Group Six. The other match is another home fixture which is to be played against Cyprus next Tuesday.

Malta suffered eight defeats in the eight matches played so far, but coach Silvio Vella on Thursday said he is hopeful that his boys will be able to obtain a positive result on Friday and perhaps also against Cyprus.

Addressing a news conference on Thursday evening, he said: "Everyone wants the points, not only us. But I firmly believe that we can achieve our aim considering that we were very unlucky to lose our matches against these two opponents in the final moments, not to mention two excellent performances."

Vella said he and the team will be missing three players - Jake Grech, Joseph Mbong and Juan Corbolan - who are all on national team duty. "It is a fact that we will miss them, but it is also something very positive to see three players making it to the national team, although there are some others also knocking on that door," he added.

He also said that for a number of players, these two matches will be the last in the Under 21 group as they will be ineligible for the next competition.

Vella did not announce his formation, but he said Qormi's Yannick Yankam, who has been playing regularly for his club in the Premier League, might be making his debut in this match.

Birkirkara midfielder Matthew Guillaumier also addressed the press and said he was thankful to everyone - doctors, family and many others - who helped him to a full recovery after his serious injury a year ago.

He said: "It was a difficult year for me being completely ruled out of the game. But now I am back and I feel confident having already played against Belgium and for my team Birkirkara in the Premier League.

"Hungary might be stronger, but I am sure that if we take our chances and take advantage of their defects, we can be lethal.

"A positive result is our aim. We were all disappointed not to have won points in the away matches against Hungary and Cyprus. Those were matches in which we did not deserve to lose. Now we need a positive result to lift our morale for our final match next week," he said.
