Updated - A year after Caruana Galizia's murder: government 'resolute... to see justice served'

Tuesday, 16 October 2018, 10:57 Last update: about 7 years ago

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the horrific murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Our thoughts are with her family and friends who are no doubt still grieving over this senseless act of violence, the government said in a statement.

The government said it is resolute in its determination to see justice served. Three people have been arrested and are being prosecuted for carrying out the murder, and the government is confident that anyone else responsible will be found and brought to justice. "We continue to support all efforts by the Police and investigating magistrate to find the truth," the government said,

Malta is committed to upholding human rights, freedom of speech, the protection of journalists and the rule of law. This sad anniversary is a stark reminder that we need to work together to protect the freedoms that democratic society affords us, the government said.

In a statement, the Nationalist Party said that the people are still waiting for justice to be served. The murder was an attack against freedom of expression, the journalistic professio and the rule of law.

The murder also left an impact on Malta's reputation and led to lack of confidence in the country's institutions, including the Office of the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Police.

The PN said it is calling for an autonomous inquiry.

In reply, the Labour Patty said the PN cannot be credible when it is led by Adrian Delia, who had ridiculed her when she was alive, and who is surrounded by people who had threatened her.

Delia wants to take political mileage from the assassination. The institutions he mocks led to the arrest of three people who have been charged in court, the PN said.

Minn dan il-qtil, li ma jirrappreżentax lis-soċjeta Maltija, Delia jrid jieħu biss kapital politiku. Iżda, hemm realtà differenti minn dik li jpinġi hu.

The requests made by Delia now are only to please a section of the party that is against him, the PL said.
