What is happening in Birzebbuga? – dead fish washing ashore

Friday, 19 October 2018, 08:01 Last update: about 7 years ago

Dead fish regularly being washed ashore in Birzebbuga is a cause of concern to many of the residents in the area.

Marine biologist Alan Deidun has uploaded a number of photos on his Facebook page, showing dead fish on the shoreline in Birzebbuga.

“What on earth is happening at Birzebbuga?,” the associate professor at the University of Malta asks.

“Why have so many dead fish (mulett – Mugil spp. – thin-lipped grey mullet and common grey mullet) washing up ashore each morning at Birzebbuga, especially after strong southerly winds? “These dead fish have been regularly washing up at Birzebbuga, according to residents, for the past five years, with beach cleaners being instructed to immediately retrieve them early in the morning…..there are a number of theories being floated around as to the real reasons behind such a high fish mortality….but I hope to have some feasible pointers sometime soon after making the right questions in the right quarters…..”
