Delia’s second maiden Budget reply speech expected to be realistic, down-to-earth

Sunday, 28 October 2018, 10:30 Last update: about 6 years ago

Opposition Leader and Nationalist Party leader Adrian Delia will tomorrow night deliver his second maiden Budget reply speech, his second - if such a thing is possible - because last year's scheduled Budget reply was superseded by the events of 16 October and he instead chose to dedicate the occasion to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Sources close to Delia, working with him on tomorrow's speech, told The Malta Independent on Sunday yesterday that that the speech is expected to be realistic and down-to-earth and one that gives hope to families who are not making ends meet.

The emphasis of tomorrow's reply to Budget 2019, according to sources contacted by this newspaper, will be to show how the government's budgetary plans lack a long-term vision and ignore the daily challenges and problems brought about by the government itself.

Delia will be delivering the speech in a bid to reach people from all walks of life understand that this government is simply riding on an economy fuelled by an increase in population from foreigners that is stalling salaries from growing while hiking rental prices.

Delia, a commercial lawyer by profession and knowledgeable about the financial services industry, delivered a speech earlier this week at the EY national conference, which was said to have been well-received by the sector, and described by many of those present as 'enlightening' and 'forward looking'.

In that speech, Delia pointed out the pitfalls of the current administration's lack of vision for the economy.

Tomorrow's reply to the Budget speech will build on this and is expected to highlight Delia's financial vision for the coming years, based on a caring society.
