Malta International Airport said it will be carrying out major pavement surface rehabilitation works on Apron 8 and maintenance works on Taxiway Echo between November 2018 and March 2019. These works fall in line with the company’s commitment towards a continual investment in the island’s airport infrastructure.

The company, in a statement, said it has invested in excess of 14.5 million euro in airfield infrastructure in recent history, as part of its long-term airfield investment plan aimed at prolonging the lifespan of the airport’s taxiways, runways and aprons to ensure future capacity, while boosting safety and efficiency levels. The works undertaken include the ongoing rehabilitation of Apron 9 - the airport’s busiest park, the partial resurfacing of Runway 23/05, and the maintenance of Taxiway Charlie and Taxiway Delta.   

Totalling a spend of around 2.6 million euro, the project will kick-start this week and will be carried out in phases until March 2019, so as to limit the impact on aircraft parking stand availability. Initial works will focus on the rehabilitation of Apron 8; the first apron to be used for commercial operations with parking space for six aircraft.

Positioned just off the old terminal, this apron hosted many a special arrival such as that of Queen Elizabeth II in the 1960s and that of Pope John Paul II in 1990. Following a hiatus over the busy summer period, works on this project will then resume in October, and are envisaged to be completed within the last quarter of 2019.

On the other hand, resurfacing works on Taxiway Echo, which is one of four taxiways linking the airport’s main runway - Runway 31/13 - to Apron 9, will commence in January with the aim to be completed by March 2019.

Malta International Airport said it will be doing its utmost to minimise disturbances caused by these works.
