Planning Authority to fund €400,000 embellishment project at Floriana’s King George V Garden

The Kind George V gardens in Floriana which holds spectacular views of the Grand Harbour will undergo upgrading works after the Planning Authority agreed, through the Development Planning Fund, to finance the project. The project which will be administered by the Floriana Local Council will cost close to €400,000.

Embellishment works will include the installation of outdoor gym equipment, CCTV security equipment, an irrigation system and perimeter fencing. The football pitch's turf will be replaced and the equipment upgraded. New and safer playing field equipment will be installed while the sanitary facilities in the garden will completely be changed. Maintenance will be carried out on the lamposts and the seating and flooring materials. The electrical and cabling systems will also be upgraded for better safety.

Situated on the Floriana bastions, the gardens were inaugurated in 1936 by King George V himself. Originally, the gardens were part of the King George V hospital but were later made accessible to the public. The entrance to the gardens is characterised by a graceful decorated arch with the British Monarchy coat-of-arms up at the top.

In 1951, a clubhouse was built within the grounds of the garden to serve as the headquarters of the Malta Playing Fields Association. The first Playing Field in Malta was installed within this same garden.

The Authority recently also signed a number of agreements to fund community projects with another eigth local councils worth over €475,000.
