Seven persons were taken in hospital after two cars crashed on the newly-opened Marsa-Hamrun by-pass, the police said.
The accident took place at 4pm.
It involved a Renault Espace driven by a 38-year-old woman, of Zabbar, who had to be released from the car by members of the Civil Protection Department. With her were three young girls, all aged 14, the police said.
The other car, a BMW X6, was driven by a 42-year-old man of Zabbar, who had a woman aged 40 of Mrsascala, and a seven-year-old boy.
All seven were taken to hospital for treatment.
One of the 14-year-old girls and the 38-year-old woman suffered grievous injuries, another was slightly hurt, while the two adults in the BMW suffered minor injuries.
The police later said that the seven-year-old boy suffered minor injuries.
Magistrate Marseanne Farrugia is conducting an inquiry.
