Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was one of the main guests of the Blockchain Leadership Summit discussing Blockchain Adoption at Government Level in Basel, Switzerland.
In his address, Muscat said that the legislation adopted by Malta is one that is technology neutral and is not specifically tied to blockchain as a stand-alone. He went on to say that this technology neutral legislation gives Malta the advantage to be prepared for future technologies as well.
The Prime Minister said that the Maltese Government is applying blockchain technology to governmental application such as educational certification and qualifications.
This means that such information can follow a person across borders without the need to carry certificates around from one place to another. He said that there are other sectors that can adopt blockchain technology, and referenced how the government is looking at health, transport and lands sector as low-hanging fruits that could benefit from it.
The Prime Minister said that Malta is aiming to become the most innovative country in the world by building an eco-system that is ideal for companies that want to invest in new technologies. He also said that Malta is offering certainty and transparency by means of its legislation which was driven by grassroots after serious consultation with disruptors, innovators, consumers and the industry.
