Mellieha bypass contractor ordered to resurface parts that ‘failed the test’ – Ian Borg

Some parts of the recently finished Mellieha bypass will have to be resurfaced after they failed the government’s test, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg told Parliament on Tuesday evening.

Replying to a supplementary question by PL MP Clayton Bartolo, Borg said the works would be paid for by the contractor. The minister said the government wanted to ensure that taxpayer money was well spent.

PN Whip Robert Cutajar, a former mayor of Mellieha, interjected, saying that the entire stretch of road should have failed the test.

Reacting, the minister said he had full faith in his predecessors.

Cutajar also asked the minister about media reports stating that an application has been filed to build more floors on top of the Panorama Hotel in Mellieha. The applicant is singer Christabelle Borg, on behalf of V&C Developments whose director, Vincent Borg, is her father.

Replying, Minister Borg said he would not speculate on media report and risk prejudicing a pending planning case. “I hope that, as a resident you have filed an objection and are following the case,” Borg told Cutajar.

Earlier, Ian Borg also spoke about Marsa project, saying that phase three would be launched soon. This phase would see the construction of flyovers to eliminate traffic lights on the busy main road.

“The third phase will begin in the coming weeks and is in line with the budget,” he said.
