Jamal Khashoggi and 17 Black

Sunday, 2 December 2018, 07:49 Last update: about 6 years ago

They are not connected in any way, but my gut feeling is that they have much in common.

The facts are so obvious. Jamal Khashoggi was killed on the direct orders of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. The intentions of the beneficiaries of the money from 17 Black were corrupt. In addition, who is defending them is corrupt and seems to have a finger in the pie too.

Populist politics are at play here. Donald Trump does not wish to involve the prince in the killing because lots of money will be lost in the process as well as an ally in the Middle East. The Labour Party is riding on a huge wave of populist politics. People are saying: come on, don't be a spoilsport. However, the fact remains that the end never justifies the means and we will have to deal with the harmful consequences that will ensue. The vision of the USA that human dignity should be upheld is becoming murky and the moral fabric of our fledgling democracy is slowly rotting.

We, who were moving slowly to becoming a Western Nation have slid back many years into nepotism, clientelism, no free speech and weak institutions. The big mistake the Nationalists did when in government was to let corruption reign in planning. The rot spread and they lost credibility. Injustice hurts not only the common people but also the whole country.
